Peter Greenwood R.I.P
Referee extraordinary
The League is saddened to hear that the much respected Peter Greenwood from Seaton, who was in his early 90s, one of their longest ever serving referees has passed away. Peter reffed for around 45 years in the Devon & Exeter league and the Perry Street League since qualification in the early 70s, and was unique in that in his latter years as I believe he travelled to ground appointments by bus.
Peter also played football until he was 30 before taking up the whistle, a Leeds United fan although most of his family support Tottenham, but he was arguably unique and a referee who never let the League down. A mad football supporter he loved the game and as a measure of his commitment he refereed 4 matches in the D & E League over a Bank holiday Friday to Monday at the age of 81.
Kay also recalls he refereed a match abroad which was being televised and made the National press in that country for letting a youngster come on at half-time and kick a ball into the goal.
Peters daughter Kay has let us know that Peters funeral is booked for 10:45am on Friday 18th March at the East Devon Crematorium , London Rd, Strete Raleigh, Whimple EX5 2PT and she would welcome anyone who knew Peter.
